Dental implants at Dash Dental Care

Situated in Manchester we are able to offer complete treatment with both placement and restoration of implants carried out at the practice.

Mr Damian O'Shea has trained in the placement and restoration of dental implants at Sheffield University by attending and treating patients on an eighteen month clinical course. He has also a Master of Medical Science degree in Dental Implantology from there. In addition he is registered with the General Dental Council as a Specialist in Oral Surgery and has undertaken extensive further training in restorative dentistry. Thus all the treatment you require for dental implants can be carried out at the practice. He is a member of the Association of Dental Implantology.

What are dental implants?

dental implantDental implants are essentially replacements for the natural roots of teeth. They can be used singly to replace one tooth or multiply to replace several or all missing teeth. Professor Brånemark started modern implantology in 1965 by treating his first patient. He had noticed in 1952 that bone grew in close apposition to titanium. He used this knowledge to develop modern implantology. They are therefore backed by many years of research and development. Dental implants are titanium cylinders to which the bone develops a close union. This is referred to as "osseointegration".The implant incorporates an internal screw space to which components can be attached. This allows crowns or bridges to be attached or dentures to be supported. Thus implants offer an alternative to dentures and bridgework or as a means to secure loose dentures.

How can dental implants be used?

Dental implants are a very flexible way of replacing missing teeth. An implant that is placed and used to replace one missing tooth could in later years be used as part of a larger restoration if other teeth were ever lost. Implants can be used to replace one missing tooth, several teeth with a bridge or a full arch of teeth either as a bridge or retaining a denture. The number of implants required and type of restoration will depend on the bone available, the number of teeth missing and the type of restoration that will be produced. For example four to six implants on the upper and five on the lower can retain a  full arch fixed bridge. To retain an overdenture four implants on the upper and two on the lower would be required.

Implant systems

The fees for implant treatment reflect the surgery costs, laboratory costs and the implant systems we use. The implant manufacturers we use develop comprehensive systems which include the implants, surgical instruments, restorative components and computer assisted design for placement and restoration of implants.

There are many implant systems on the market with a very large range of costs. The three sytems we use in the practice are manufactured by Biomet 3i, Straumann and Nobel Biocare.

Implant consultation

At an implant consultation a full assessment is made. This includes a full medical history to identify any conditions of significance, a thorough dental examination, radiographs and study models and photographs as appropriate. From this a written treatment plan and estimate is produced. A further appointment is then arranged to discuss the proposed treatment and answer any questions you may have. If you decide to proceed with the treatment then further planning would be carried out. There is of course no obligation to have any treatment. The cost of a full examination and treatment plan to include study models and routine radiographs is £95.00.

Cost and payment

The cost of implant treatment depends on the number of implants and the complexity of treatment. After a full examination a detailed estimate of costs is always provided.

We are also able to arrange financial packages so that the cost can be spread over a number of years. This includes a 0% option for up to 24 months.

Although the cost of implant treatment is high the benefits to patients are great and this makes it worthwhile. In the long term implants will often prove to be the more cost effective solution to missing teeth and a worthwhile investment.
